Conceptualizing acts and behaviours that comprise intimate partner violence: a concept map

Abstract: BackgroundThis study aims to explore the conceptualization of intimate partner violence (IPV) among men and women from diverse subpopulations in Toronto, ON, Canada. Relatively few research efforts have been made to examine differences in conceptualizations of IPV across populations of different race and ethnic backgrounds.MethodsUsing concept mapping methodology, we sampled 67 women and men identified concepts and groups of concepts (domains) that reflected their understandings of the behaviours and attitudes… Show more

“…Stress values, which represent the stability of the map configuration, were within the accepted parameters (ideal stress values < 0.36; ours was 0.24) . Concept Systems allows researchers to examine specific “bridging” scores, which take on a value between 0 to 1 and represent how often items were sorted with the items in closest proximity; items with values close to 0 are more closely associated with neighboring items, whereas statements with higher bridging scores are likely to have been sorted with items farther across the map …”

“…Participants sorted the 71 items into conceptually similar groups that “made sense to them” and labeled their groups in accordance with the theme of the items. Participants rated the 71 items for importance in defining IPV and in prompting a victim to seek help; details of this component are provided in a separate article [ 24 ]. The research team entered the Sorting data into the Concept Mapping software that generated visual maps (more detail below).…”

“…Other research used a mapping and clustering methodology to study the conceptual proximity of types of relationship stress to the construct of IPV, classifying EB along with 17 other behaviors into a cluster called psychological abuse, rated as having "moderate" conceptual proximity to IPV. A narrow definition of EB was used, "perpetrator threatening suicide or divorce" (O'Campo et al, 2015(O'Campo et al, , p. 1973. A broader definition consistent with Forward's model would have classified EB into their social and emotional manipulation cluster, which had "high" conceptual proximity to IPV.…”
