Abstract:The aims of this study are manifold. First, to investigate the potentials of architectural heritage in the context of tourism destination development, as well as examine public sector policies and make plans toward the preservation of these resources. Secondly, to appraise the outcome of preservation and its implications for tourism. The study is an effort to explore and understand the interrelationships between tourism and architectural heritage sites through tourist image and perception. For the purposes of this research, numerous heritage sites were sampled in Portugal. A mixed research method was utilized to gauge tourists' image/perception of heritage resources, and impact (quantitative approach). A qualitative approach was utilized to assess the priority of tourists in their visits and public-sector policies toward heritage resource management and planning. The fuzzy logic method was used to assess the architectural value and the tourist and preservation potential of historical buildings in Porto/Aveiro. The contribution and implications of the study are also explained. The results revealed that architectural heritage resources have the most appeal to tourists. The study to date demonstrates the architectural value and tourist and preservation potential of the buildings observed via evaluation by fuzzy logic methods.

Despite fierce criticisms, ‘rural’ and ‘urban’ still constitute powerful narratives around which our society is structured. The ‘formal reality’, however, frequently disregards the cultural nature of these concepts, elevating them to the role of objective spaces apt to serve as acceptable guiding perspectives. While the analytical inadequacy of rural-urban ideations is well-documented, the phenomenon of formal-cultural conflation remains much less explored. Acknowledging that ideational space of social representations can only exist through the practices of discursive interaction, this paper’s objective is to lay bare the phenomenon of rural-urban thinking when externalized through the little-known practices of ‘degradation’ and ‘restitution’ in Poland. Using conceptual methods, including discourse analysis and historical deconstruction, this paper assays the hidden architectures of formal-cultural conflation by means of a richly contextualized analysis. The findings, presented in four discursive openings, reveal embedded elements of hierarchy, loss, injustice and self-victimization, which may create a divisive culture spawned by elusive promises of development at the cost of misinterpretations of history, local disappointment and cultural segmentation. In conclusion, formal appropriation of historical concepts is likely to engender a cultural geography of discord spun around a largely insignificant division, especially when development-oriented aspects of urbanization become entwined with emotional issues.

Tourism publication and citation patterns have been analysed repeatedly: most recently, by Hall (2011), Benckendorff and Zehrer (2013), Fennell (2013), and Xin, Tribe, and Chambers (2013). Initially there were few researchers or journals, and ideas and information were largely imported from other disciplines. This has continued, but as tourism research expanded, it also became increasingly self-referential. Here we examine whether it has entered a third phase, with outward citations in other academic disciplines: a key criterion for a mature field of study. For comparison, economics research examines how humans allocate resources, and is cited across many other disciplines. Tourism research examines how humans move around, which a priori seems equally fundamental. Here, therefore, we test how widely tourism research is cited in non-tourism journals. All searches were conducted during 2012 and 2013.We used a rationally efficient search strategy to answer this question robustly and reliably. It might theoretically be possible to search the world's entire electronic literature for all citations of all articles in all tourism journals, but this would be very inefficient. Our strategy involved two steps. The first step used an iterative approach to identify the tourism journals most often cited in other disciplines. Part of this iteration involved the identification of nontourism disciplines most commonly cross-cited cited with tourism. This step is a precaution, required since the impact factors of tourism journals are derived largely from citations of articles in other tourism journals. Thus, IFs of tourism journals may not accurately identify the journals cited most often in non-tourism journals. This step does not generate final data. It is simply to ensure that the second step captures the dense part of the dataset, the fat body rather than the long tail, because that determines the reliability of the overall result. In the second step, we compiled and analysed all citations in non-tourism journals, for all articles published in highly-cited tourism journals. This is the step which generated our primary data.
