Many scholars often use the terms “metaphors,” “analogies,” and “models” interchangeably and inadvertently overlook the uniqueness of each word. According to recent cognitive studies, the three terms involve distinct cognitive processes using features from a familiar concept and applying them to an abstract, complicated concept. In the field of science and religion, there have been various objects or ideas used as metaphors, analogies, or models to describe the science–religion relationship. Although these heuristic tools provided some understanding of the complex interaction, they failed to address the broad nature of science and religion as well as the multifarious relationship between the two in a sociocultural context. Unlike the previous candidates, the concept of language, including the notions of linguistic worldview, linguistic identity, dialects, power, and bilingualism, offers a unique and comprehensive window through which science, religion, and the relationship between the two are seen with clarity.

This research-in-progress paper proposes the need for a move towards more meaningful variability of visual notations. Evidence accumulated via an online survey on the requirements practitioners have for visual notations, indicate the need for variability of a modeling languages visual notation. Widely used modeling languages in practice such as UML and BPMN do not support redesign of the visual notation of core constructs without modifying or extending the underlying abstract syntax and semantics (e.g., UML stereotypes, BPMN extensions). The expressed need to vary commonly used visual notations depending on particular users or contexts, while not changing the underlying modeling language itself, poses a set of research challenges discussed here.

The Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) is a general modeling formalism with sound semantics founded on a system theoretic basis. It can be used as a base for the development of specialized modeling formalisms. Usually, the extensions of DEVS expand the classes of systems models that can be represented in DEVS. However, with a growing number in new variants of DEVS and an increasing number of problems to be solved using discrete simulation techniques, it is necessary to define the relations among different approaches. This paper presents a conceptual modeling perspective applied to DEVS extensions that structure a framework over the traditional modeling and simulation approach. The framework provides a multilevel structure to analyze the features required for each extension type. Two main types of extensions are identified: variants and subclasses. In order to illustrate the proposed guidelines, the Routed DEVS formalism is presented as example of the subclass type.
