Conceptual Model of Health‐Related Quality of Life

Abstract: In quality-of-life research, the current challenge is to devise models to clarify the elements of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the causal relationships among them. This revision of Wilson and Cleary's model includes a taxonomy of the variables that often have been used to measure HRQoL. This revision should be useful in research and clinical practice.

“…The final limitation of this study was the lack of a global question for the general health perceptions and overall quality of life components of the revised HRQOL model as suggested by the work of Ferrans et al (2005). Global questions for these two components could possibly have assisted in explaining why a child's weight did not appear to impact QOL in children with asthma like it has been shown to do in adults (Fontaine & Barofsky, 2001).…”

“…In addition, the patient's values and preferences were shown as contributing to the last two levels, general health perceptions and overall quality of life. Ferrans et al, 2005). A way to assess functional status would be to measure aerobic capacity by using a symptom-limited exercise test, which measures maximal oxygen uptake (C. E. Ferrans et al, 2005).…”

“…In this study, we use both approaches to explore older adults' wellbeing through the multidimensional constructs of health-related and global QoL. The field of health-related QoL especially focuses on the effects of health, illness, and treatment on QoL (Ferrans et al 2005), making it possible to capture the individuals' perceptions of those effects in their lives (Martínez Martín 2006). Consequently, attention has been drawn to health-related QoL as an outcome to assess health programs and interventions (Badía Llach et al 2002).…”
