Conceptual Framework of Organic Electronics

Abstract: In this account, we discuss the common molecular features and the related chemistry concepts across several different areas of organic electronics, including molecular semiconductors and single-molecule junctions. Despite seemingly diverse charge transport mechanisms and device set-ups, various molecular electronics systems can benefit from the same fundamental principles of physical organic chemistry, based upon the electronic structure and geometry of their molecular building blocks and the intermolecular i… Show more

“…In this work, the transport properties of a specific tungsten-based POM molecule, [W 18 O 54 (SO 3 ) 2 ] 4– , are explored theoretically by computational modeling of POM molecular junctions. Single molecule junctions are the simplest devices for exploring the properties of single molecule electronics both experimentally and theoretically, with many examples in the literature. …”

“…4,5 Another commonly used method for measuring single-molecule conductance is the mechanically controlled break junction (MCBJ) technique that provides benefits such as enhanced mechanical stability. 6,7 In the past decade, we have seen a growing number of organic, 8 organometallic, 9,10 inorganic cluster, 11 peptide, 12,13 and DNA 14,15 molecules being investigated for relating their single-molecule electronic properties to their structures.…”
