Conceptual Design of Double‐Feed Reactive Distillation Columns

Abstract: The feasibility and feasible range of operating parameters for double-feed reactive distillation columns are evaluated, based on the combination of pinch point map analysis for the middle-section in the compositional space and the feed angle method as an efficient shortcut design method. Limiting bounds for operating parameters are determined where the properties of singular points change. The existence and values of such bounds may vary in double-feed reactive distillation columns depending on the nature of t… Show more

“…In recent years, reactive distillation has made promising progresses. Avami 1 investigated the operation parameters for double‐feed reactive distillation columns by introducing methyl acetate and ethyl acetate. Based on pinch point map analysis and feed angle method, limiting bounds of operating parameters in changed properties of singular points were determined.…”

“…The recycle streams also provide additional methanol to be fed into the reaction mixtures. Based on the design proposed [1,2], the bottom product from the reactive distillation column is high-purity TAME while the distillate contains about 30 mol % methanol and 70 mol % inert C5s. To be practical, this excess methanol will be recovered and recycled back to the system such that the only products will be pure TAME and inerts.…”

“…These fixed points are also termed pinch points since the driving force for mass transfer between the phases becomes infinitesimally small . The pinch points are the basis for different shortcut methods for the calculation of the minimum energy demand in single-feed distillation columns for the separation of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, , extractive distillation columns, and reactive distillation . Although impressive results have been published for these methods they are not implemented in commercial process simulators.…”
