Concepts of health and disease and caries prediction: a literature review

Abstract: Abstract— Biomedical determinants of dental caries have been more extensively investigated than psychosocial factors and their impact on caries prevalence and incidence seems to be greater. However, a majority of these investigations relate to children and adolescents. An implementation of social and psychologic variables may be more relevant regarding dental caries in adults. In addition, a multidisciplinary approach might improve our understanding of dental caries as a multifactorial disease and bridge the g… Show more

“…Past dental caries experience, as measured by DMFS at baseline, proved to be our most powerful predictor of future caries, and in this respect our study agreed with numerous others (13,35,47,50). Toothbrushing frequency also had weak predictive power in our study and this may indirectly reflect socioeconomic status, a factor that has been shown to be important (51,52). On the other hand, toothbrushing frequency might be expected to be related to plaque index, a factor which had no predictive power.…”

“…A literature search was conducted using the University of Washington database search program UWIN. The search was limited to the most recent decade as reviews exist for prior literature (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11). Key words included ''caries and risk assessment'' and ''caries and prediction''.…”
