Concepts in Critical Thinking Applied to Caries Risk Assessment in Dental Education

Abstract: Much progress has been made in the science of caries risk assessment and ways to analyze caries risk, yet dental education has seen little movement toward the development of frameworks to guide learning and assess critical thinking in caries risk assessment. In the absence of previous proactive implementation of a learning framework that takes the knowledge of caries risk and critically applies it to the patient with the succinctness demanded in the clinical setting, the purpose of this study was to develop a … Show more

“…In 4 of the examples, measured performance improvement was shown, each with some extended effort in developing respective exercises. 3,[5][6][7] Still in the early stages, the emulation model does not reveal the student's ability to conceptualize patient situations. The difference between critical thinking skill sets that derive probing questions and those calling on the student to conceptualize may be substantial.…”

“…Once the skillsets were developed and introduced to students, those students were directly assessed in the act of critical thinking, using both objective and subjective measures 7 , 9 , 12 . The assessment of the student's success employing the skillsets was based on the following questions: 1) Does the student know the steps in the process and systematically apply each step to the patient or case?…”

“…In some cases, student‐led approaches have been expanded to student‐led clinics for patient care, thus challenging students to critically think from both a patient care perspective and a financial model perspective 34 . Some groups are approaching this challenge by creating workflows in student clinics that require a combined knowledge of clinical risk assessment across disciplines and individual patient need measurements in clinical settings 29 . This reinforcement of critical thinking while in clinical care will better prepare students to work in sustainable intra‐ and interprofessional models of patient care.…”
