Concepts and Principles of Photodynamic Therapy as an Alternative Antifungal Discovery Platform

Abstract: Opportunistic fungal pathogens may cause superficial or serious invasive infections, especially in immunocompromised and debilitated patients. Invasive mycoses represent an exponentially growing threat for human health due to a combination of slow diagnosis and the existence of relatively few classes of available and effective antifungal drugs. Therefore systemic fungal infections result in high attributable mortality. There is an urgent need to pursue and deploy novel and effective alternative antifungal coun… Show more

“…The three main components of PDT are visible light, FS and oxygen 16 . Due to the fact that they absorb light with high efficiency, in some region of the visible spectrum, some of the FSs are able to induce or participate in photochemical reactions and produce reactive oxygen molecules 5,14,[17][18] .…”

“…A promising alternative is antimicrobial photodynamic treatment (APDT) which can be used to kill fungi both in animal hosts and in the environment [25][26][27]. APDT is based on the combination of three elements: photosensitizer (PS), light, and molecular oxygen.…”
