Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) play a pivotal role in modern data acquisition systems, but their energy‐efficient operation remains a significant challenge. This work provides a concise overview of the key challenges and proposed solutions discussed in the context of energy‐efficient routing protocols for WSNs based on a systematic literature review. The need for fault tolerance to ensure network resilience is vital, given the limited resources and environmental challenges faced by sensor nodes. This work emphasizes the importance of addressing several open research questions, including the integration of diverse topologies, cross‐layer routing, and the use of multiple mobile sinks. Additionally, it highlights the need for QoS‐aware routing for real‐time applications, mathematical modeling for protocol evaluation, and the challenges of testing routing protocols on real hardware. Furthermore, this article suggests leveraging the RPL routing protocol with the Node‐based Metric RNE for enhanced energy efficiency and explores the promising field of hierarchical routing protocols, exemplified by the LEACH protocol and its variants. This work serves as a roadmap for researchers and practitioners, identifying critical challenges and proposing directions for future research to achieve energy‐efficient routing protocols in WSNs, ultimately enabling effective communication in resource‐constrained environments.

Sensor nodes are mainly shielded in the field with limited power supply. In Wireless Sensor Networks, there must be a requirement of an efficient power management, because sensor nodes are deployed in unman attended area with non-rechargeable batteries. Power management can be done by different methods of routing protocols. The proposed Reliable Rim Routing (3R) technique is based on hybrid routing protocol for homogeneous and heterogeneous system for WSNs to ameliorate the performance of the overall system. In 3R, total node deployment area can be multipart in terms of rim and in each rim, and some of the sensor nodes transmit their sensed data directly to base station, and meanwhile remaining sensor nodes send the data through clustering technique to base station like SEP. Proposed 3R technique implementation proves its enhanced WSNs lifetime of 70% energy consumption and 40% throughput compared with existing protocols. Simulation and evaluation results outperformed in terms of energy consumption with increased throughput and network lifetime.

The wireless sensor network (WSN) is one of the budding exploring areas and fast rising fields in wireless communications. The sensor nodes in the network are generally small-size, low-cost, lowpower and multi-function capabilities. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used for various applications; since numerous sensor nodes are usually deployed on remote and inaccessible places, the employment and preservation should be easy and scalable. Sensor nodes in the field being run out of energy quickly has been an issue and many energy efficient routing protocols have been proposed to solve this problem and preserve the long life of the network. This paper work proposes a hierarchical based node activation routing technique which shows energy efficiency. This technique selects cluster head with highest residual energy in each communication round of transmission to the base station from the cluster heads. Hierarchical based node activation routing technique with different levels of hierarchy simulation results prolongs the lifetime of the network compared to other clustering schemes and communication rounds of simulation increase significantly.
