Concept Studies of Scanning and Combined Scan/Phase Antenna Diversity Systems for SDARS

Abstract: Severalconcepts of antenna diversity for satellite digital audio radio systems (SDARS) are investigated. Acomparison is made regarding the improvement of reception quality.Special attention is paid to easy realisation in an automotive environment. Proof is shown that for critical reception scenarios for example underneath dense foliage or in multipath situations between high buildings an antenna diversity system yields asignificant reduction of the total duration of mutes. The concept of anew scan diversity an… Show more

“…An improvement of the reception quality in terms of a reduction of the mute duration in fading scenarios is achieved by a scan-phase antenna diversity system [10]. A block diagram as well as a photograph of the compact printed circuit board with a size of 60 mm × 45 mm are depicted in Fig.…”

“…In this paper a combination of scanning and phase-diversity is employed. This scan-phase-diversity system has the advantage of being able to switch off weak antenna signals in combination with the ability to superimpose phase-aligned antenna signals for an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) [4]. The hardware effort of such a system can be kept low with only very few additional elements in comparison to a standard single antenna system.…”

“…Separate RF cables and tuners are needed for each antenna signal as well as complex phase and SNR estimation. A scanphase antenna diversity system is a much leaner system with a comparatively low hardware effort [3]. The block diagram of such a system is depicted in Fig.…”
