DefinitionAyurveda is a Sanskrit word and is made up of two words, Ayuh means life and Veda means knowledge. So, Ayurveda means knowledge of life. The main aims of Ayurveda are to maintain the health of healthy individuals and to manage the disease conditions.Ayurveda has its unique and comprehensive concepts based on philosophy, such as anatomy, physiology, disease pathology, diagnosis and prognosis and pharmacology and therapeutics. Briefly, similar to the universe, people are considered to be made up of Panchamahabhuta (five elements namely, Prithvi (earth), Jal (water), Agni (fire), Vayu (air) and Aakash (aether)). Health is defined as a state of equilibrium of Dosha (humours namely, Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (water)), Agni (such as digestive juices, enzymes and hormones involved in the digestion and metabolism), Dhatu (tissues, namely Rasa (lymph), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (marrow) and Shukra (semen)) and Mala (excretion of waste products, namely Purisha (faeces), Mutra (urine) and Sweda (sweat)) along with a happy state of Atma (soul), Indriya (sensory and motor organs) and Manas (mind). An imbalance of these brings disease, and the aim is to bring back normalcy.
