Concept and considerations of a medical device: the active noise cancelling incubator

Abstract: BackgroundAn increasingly 24/7 connected and urbanised world has created a silent pandemic of noise-induced hearing loss. Ensuring survival to children born (extremely) preterm is crucial. The incubator is a closed medical device, modifying the internal climate, and thus providing an environment for the child, as safe, warm, and comfortable as possible. While sound outside the incubator is managed and has decreased over the years, managing the noise inside the incubator is still a challenge.MethodUsing active … Show more

“…The future will add new technology like artifial intelligence (AI) into the incubator system to control all parameters and all changes in parameters timely as close as possible [76][77][78][79]. A fully operational incubator with precise control over temperature, humidity, and airflow was designed and evaluated in a project [79].…”

“…This was reduced by 5% with active noise-canceling, equivalent to approximately an 18 dB decrease (71 ± 4 dB decrease to 56 ± 1 dB) [56]. Another new technology is the prototype Active Noise Canceling Incubator which proposes to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, and machine learning algorithms with feedback and feedforward to predict, analyze, and recreate an environment within the isolette to be as natural as possible for the NICU [60].…”
