Concentric polycyclic regrowth pattern in alopecia areata

Abstract: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common form of autoimmune nonscarring hair loss of scalp and/or body. Atypical hair regrowth in AA is considered a rare phenomenon. It includes atypical pattern of hair growth (sudden graying, perinevoid alopecia, Renbok phenomenon, castling phenomenon, and concentric or targetoid regrowth) and atypical dark color hair regrowth. We report a case of AA that resulted in a concentric targetoid hair regrowth and discuss the possible related theories regarding the significance of this phen… Show more

“…It is important to point out that patients under treatment with these drugs should be constantly clinically monitored due to the adverse effects that can be generated such as weight gain, avascular necrosis, hypertension, diabetes, sleep disturbances, mood changes, acne, sensitivity to allergies 21 , atypical hair coloration 59 or even diseases such as vitiligo, which can be caused by diphenylcyclopropenone. 26 Despite the different treatment options for AA, it is clear that each individual responds differently to the drug and the disease; 29 examples of this are cases of severe AA, in which the response to any drug could depend on a set of factors, such as age at start of onset, patient age, family history, in addition to the clinical conditions that could be associated.…”

“…Similarly, in AA, there are several different patterns of hair regrowth in alopecic patches. [3][4][5] However, although there have been several case reports about interesting morphological features of hair regrowth in patients with AA, systematic investigations and classifications of the hair regrowth patterns in AA have been rarely conducted. The aim of this study is to systematically analyse and classify the morphological hair growth patterns found in AA patches.…”

“…ELP restricted to the nails seems to be a rare variety of LP that may accompany mucosal and cutaneous disease (above all the soles of the feet); nail ELP (NELP) is characterized by erosions of the nail bed, acute inflammation of nail folds and permanent anonychia. [1][2][3][4] The aim of these case series was to provide clinical findings of NELP in order to promptly detect and to avoid permanent damage.…”

“…Alopecia areata is also associated with other autoimmune disorders, such as vitiligo, thyroid abnormalities, and diabetes, and AA is commonly reported together with these cases [3] of alopecia of the scalp vary widely in terms of shape and extent, from a single round patch to a large surface area (termed as alopecia totalis) [4]. Much atypical hair regrowth in AA has been reported and been considered a rare phenomenon [5]. During attack of alopecia areata, hair involvement occurs in a synchronized way, so in one patch all the hair follicles are affected, but during therapy the hair might regrow in waves, the so called targetoid concentric hair regrowth, and this pattern although is rare but it's well documented in literature.…”
