Concentrations of progesterone and oxytocin receptors in endometrium of postpartum cows expected to have a short or normal oestrous cycle

Abstract: Luteal lifespan is short after first postpartum ovulation in early-weaned beef cows unless cows are pretreated with a progestogen. Regression of the short-lived corpus luteum in the postpartum beef cow is due to a premature release of prostaglandin F2\ g=a\(PGF2\g=a\) from the uterus. The premature release of PGF2\g=a\ may be mediated through lower concentrations of receptors for progesterone, higher concentrations of oxytocin receptors, or both, in the endometrium. Thirty-one beef cows were randomly assigned … Show more

“…Outro efeito benéfico da progesterona exógena na vaca em anestro pós-parto é o de prolongar a vida do corpo lúteo formado a partir do folículo selecionado neste período, provavelmente por inibir receptores de ocitocina no endométrio e diminuir a probabilidade da ocorrência de ciclos curtos (Zollers et al, 1993).…”

“…no behavioural oestrus; Kyle et al, 1992) and is generally (>70%) followed by a short cycle, usually containing just one follicle wave. This first luteal phase is of short duration because of the premature release of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α; , thought to be induced by increased oestradiol produced from the formation of the postovulatory dominant follicle on days 5 to 8 of the cycle, inducing premature oestradiol and oxytocin (Zollers et al, 1993) receptors. Thus, the CL, which also secretes lower quantities of progesterone, regresses prematurely around days 8 to 10 of the cycle, with the second ovulation (of this postovulatory dominant follicle) occurring around days 9 to 11 after the first ovulation.…”
