Acetate is a key intermediate of organic matter mineralization, but its metabolism remains largely unconstrained in the pelagic ocean. We conducted an integrated biogeochemical study to investigate microbial acetate cycling in the northern Gulf of Mexico with the goal of elucidating the importance of acetate as a carbon and energy source. Acetate was used primarily as an energy source, as evidenced by observed oxidation rates (rate constant k: 0.06–0.22 day−1) that varied between 42% and 96% of total biological acetate uptake (i.e., assimilation + oxidation; k: 0.06–0.34 day−1). The assimilation of acetate into biomass (k: 0.01–0.20 day−1) illustrated the potential significance of acetate as a biomass carbon source, particularly in nutrient‐rich coastal waters. No relationship between acetate assimilation or oxidation and environmental factors, such as chlorophyll and nutrients, was observed. However, elevated acetate uptake in reduced oxygen waters characterized by particulate organic carbon mineralization suggests that acetate metabolism may be a good proxy for particulate organic carbon breakdown. Molecular genetic analysis revealed that SAR11 Alphaproteobacteria were the most abundant heterotrophic bacteria and suggest that they may utilize acetate. At some sites, acetate carbon may have accounted for up to 50.4% of the bacterial carbon production. These results suggest that acetate may serve as an important carbon and energy source for heterotrophic bacteria thus revealing a potentially significant role of acetate for dissolved organic carbon cycling in the ocean.

Rate constants were strongly correlated with CDOM absorption coefficients (a 350 ). a 350 -normalised rate constants increased~10-fold from river to seawater. a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c tDimethylsulphide (DMS) photo-oxidation and dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) photoproduction were estimated in 26 laboratory irradiations of coastal samples from NE England (Tyne estuary) and W Scotland (Loch Linnhe and River Nant at Taynuilt). Pseudo-first order rate constants of DMS photo-oxidation (0.038 h À1 to 0.345 h À1 ) and DMSO photo-production (0.017 h À1 to 0.283 h À1 ) varied by one order of magnitude and were lowest in the coastal North Sea. Estuarine samples (salinity S < 30) had a mean DMSO yield of 96 ± 16% (n ¼ 14), consistent with 1:1 M conversion via photosensitised oxidation by singlet oxygen. Photochemical rate constants were strongly correlated with coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficients at 350 nm, a 350 . Variations in a 350 explained 61% (R 2 ¼ 0.61, n ¼ 26) and 73% (R 2 ¼ 0.73, n ¼ 17) of the variability in DMS photo-oxidation and DMSO production, respectively. However, CDOM normalised photochemical rate constants increased strongly towards coastal waters exhibiting lowest CDOM absorbance, indicating water samples of marine character (S > 30) to be most reactive with respect to DMS photo-oxidation. Estimates of water column averaged DMS photo-oxidation rate constants, obtained by scaling to mean daily irradiance (July, NE England) and mid-UV underwater irradiance, were 0.012 d À1 , 0.019 d À1 , and 0.017 d À1 for upper estuary (S < 20), lower estuary (20 < S < 30) and coastal waters (S > 30), at the lower end of previous observations. Comparing our water column averaged DMS photo-oxidation rate constants with estimated DMS losses via air-sea gas exchange and previously reported biological consumption implies that DMS photochemical removal is of only minor importance in our study area.

Spatiotemporal distributions of dissolved acrylic acid (AAd) and related biogenic sulfur compounds including dimethylsulfide (DMS) and dissolved and total dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSPd and DMSPt) were investigated in the Bohai Sea (BS) and Yellow Sea (YS) during summer and winter. AAd and DMS production from DMSPd degradation and AAd degradation were analyzed. Significant seasonal variations in AAd and DMS(P) were observed. AAd exhibited similar distributions during summer and winter; i.e., relatively high values of AAd occurred in the BS and the northern YS, and the concentrations decreased from inshore to offshore areas in the southern YS. Due to strong biological production from DMSP and abundant terrestrial inputs from rivers in summer, the AAd concentrations in the surface seawater during summer (30.01 nmol L −1 ) were significantly higher than those during winter (14.98 nmol L −1 ). The average concentration sequence along the transects during summer (AAd > DMSPt > DMS > DMSPd) showed that particulate DMSP (DMSPp) acted as a DMS producer and that terrestrial sources of AAd were present; in contrast, the sequence in winter was AAd > DMSPt > DMSPd > DMS. High values of AAd and DMS(P) were mostly observed in the upper layers, with occasional high values at the bottom. High AAd concentrations in the porewater, which could be transported to the bottom water, might result from the cleavage of intracellular DMSP and reduce bacterial metabolism in sediments. In addition, the production and degradation rates of biogenic sulfur compounds were significantly higher in summer than in winter, and the removal of AAd was pri-marily attributed to microbial consumption. Other sources of AAd existed aside from the production from DMSPd.
