Concentration of Selected Metalloproteinases and Osteocalcin in the Serum and Synovial Fluid of Obese Women with Advanced Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of selected MMPs (matrix metalloproteinases) and osteocalcin in the serum and synovial fluid of obese women with osteoarthritis and their correlations with clinical status. The studied group consisted of 39 overweight females undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty due to osteoarthritis (OA). The staging of knee OA was evaluated according to the Ahlbӓck and Kellgren–Lawrence scores. Synovial fluid and peripheral blood samples were obtained. The levels of selec… Show more

“…and Jarecki, J. et al . recognized regular growth levels of MMP-3, MMP-9 and pro-MMP-13 when changing X-ray stage damage joints that explain active inflammatory process in OA [16,17]. We are too confirmed specified pattern , which, in our opinion, is not only the result of inflammation reaction , but also progressive degradation cartilage fabrics.…”

“…At the early OA stages, the Hoffa fat pad (IPFP—infrapatellar fat pad) increases its activity. The exact mechanism of the development of these changes in early OA is not clear but may consist in increased production of cytokines, adipokines, interleukins, and growth factors secreted by IPFP, which accelerate cartilage destruction through enhanced production of matrix metalloproteinases [ 1 , 61 , 62 ]. There are also no data showing changes in the IPFP volume in early OA.…”

“…Matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) has been involved in the pathological process of various diseases, including OA. The increased expression of MMP9 promoted the progression of diabetic OA via accelerating chondrocyte apoptosis and suppressing cartilage differentiation [ 33 , 34 ]. MMP9 was upregulated in synovial fluid of patients with OA [ 35 ], and increased MMP9 protein level may be related to the pathogenesis of OA [ 36 ].…”
