“…Sediments are composed of small organic and inorganic particles which show higher adsorption capacities for PBDEs due to their large surface area. In addition, the strong hydrophobic properties of PBDEs allow them to accumulate in sediment (Binelli et al 2007). The most polluted sediment sample in our study was from S6 and S7, where R 20 PBDEs concentrations were as high as 6.0 9 10 3 ng g -1 .…”

“…All of the analytes were separated by a Rtx-5MS (Restek, Bellefonte, PA) capillary column (30 m length, 0.25-mm i.d., 0.25 lm df) under the following conditions specified by Binelli et al (2007): carrier gas helium at 1.2 mL/min; injection pressure of 120 kPa; transfer pressure of 240 kPa; injector temperature starting at 70°C and maintained for 1.2 min, then ramped to 280°C (held 1.2 min) at 14°C/s; initial oven temperature set at 70°C (held 1 min), then ramped to 220°C at 30°C/min (held 1 min), and finally to 290°C at 4°C/min (held 20 min). The samples were analyzed using tandem mass spectrometry under the following instrumental conditions: the electric ionization mode with standard electron energy of 70 eV was used, and the transfer line was maintained at 280°C, the damping gas at 2 mL/min, and the ion source at 260°C.…”

“…PBDEs are a group of brominated compounds that widely used as flame-retardants in furniture and consumer products. The concentration of PBDEs in sediments have increased from the 1960s or 1970s to the 1990s in Europe, North America and Asia (Binelli et al, 2007;Chen et al, 2007;Hites and Zhu, 2005;Sakai et al, 2002;Song et al, 2005;Zegers et al, 2003). Although the use of penta-and octa-BDEs has been restricted in the European Union and in certain parts of the United States (Renner, 2004), a vast number of products containing PBDEs still remain in use.…”
