“…Azithromycin exhibits excellent ability to penetrate into both normal and pathological periodontal tissues (12, 64). Fluoroquinolones also penetrate readily into periodontal tissue and gingival crevicular fluid and may reach even higher concentrations than in serum (10, 20, 43, 84). In contrast to earlier studies, Sakkelari et al (100) found that the average concentration of systemically administered tetracyclines in gingival crevicular fluid was less than in plasma and varied widely among individuals (between 0 and 8 μg/ml), with approximately 50% of samples not achieving levels of 1 μg/ml, possibly explaining much of the variability in clinical response to systemic tetracyclines observed in practice.…”

“…Data about the level of moxifloxacin within gingival crevicular fluid are not available, but similar levels as measured for ofloxacin, as an example of another fluoroquinolone, might be assumed. Evaluation of a controlled-release insert consisting of 11 % ofloxacin showed concentrations of 1700 µg ml −1 at 3 h after insertion, which decreased to 10 µg ml −1 after 1 day (Higashi et al , 1989). A general problem associated with antibacterials use is the development of resistance.…”
