Concentration of mercury species in hair, blood and urine of individuals occupationally exposed to gaseous elemental mercury in Asturias (Spain) and its comparison with individuals from a control group formed by close relatives

Abstract: Between November 19 th , and December 3 rd , 2012, 50 workers were intoxicated with gaseous Hg in San Juan de Nieva (Asturias, Spain) during the maintenance of a heat exchanger of a zinc manufacturer. We have quantified the concentration of methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg) and Hg(II) in blood, hair and urine samples of those individuals taken three years after the accident. Blood, hair and urine of their closest relatives were also analyzed to assess whether the mercury burden present in the intoxicat… Show more

“…Post-shift urinary excretion data from di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and phthalic acid were taken from an exposure study among workers of a chemical plant producing DEHP from phthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol [ 55 ]. For these data and other endpoints like mercury in hair [ 54 ] the required number of exposed workers and controls are similar to those indicated for welders. Overall, the target population size for this project, assuming three to four companies from two to four categories of e-waste processing, is presented in Table 7 .…”

“…ASGM has heavily elevated the Hg levels in the environment near mining sites and caused significant health impacts on miners and nearby residents ( Gerson et al., 2022 ; Basu et al., 2015 ; Queipo-Abad et al., 2019 ; Gibb and O’Leary, 2014 ; Dong et al., 2015 ; Rajaee et al., 2015 ). Due to the long lifetime of Hg in the atmosphere (∼0.5–1 year), the atmospheric emissions from ASGM can also be transported globally and become part of its global biogeochemical cycles ( Strode et al., 2009 ).…”

“…However, recent studies have reported that the human hair displays significant correlations between the MMHg fraction and δ 202 Hg THg or Δ 199 Hg THg , which suggests distinct isotope properties between the IHg and MMHg fractions. Therefore, using the isotope values of THg to quantify the MMHg exposure sources contains large uncertainties since the human hair, fishery foods, and rice occasionally present low MMHg/THg values, , and the mechanisms that are behind the biogeochemical behaviors of different Hg species are poorly understood . Although gas chromatography (GC) has been used for the separation and identification of chemical Hg compounds, this online method may cause variations of up to 0.5‰ in δ 202 Hg, which result in low precision when analyzing the MMHg isotope values. , Recently, a selective extraction method (SEM) has been developed for compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA), which can extract MMHg from aqueous biological samples without GC separation and offers high precision for the MMHg isotope values .…”
