“…A major effect by this type of stress can be ruled out by the study of Eik-Nes (12) who did not detect an acute influence of intravenous ACTH on testosterone production in the dog. In the monkey, serum levels of gonadotropin are not modified by surgery (13). On the basis of our data on the peripheral plasma concentrations of testosterone in dogs submitted to a laparotomy and in animals which did not, we can conclude that surgery itself has little effect on the production rate of T in the canine species.…”

“…Since only one pair of specimens of blood was obtained from one subject, it is impossible to recognize positively the preovulatory peak of LH. However, subjects 23, 12, 26 and 7 were those who had the high LH levels [see previous publication describing ovarian and peripheral plasma gonadotrophins (16)]. This finding, in addition to the menstrual history, endometrial biopsy dating and ovarian morphology, would seem reasonably good evidence that these subjects were operated on close to the time of ovulation.…”

“…In addition, pregnenolone, 4 17a-hydroxy progesterone (17-OHP), 20a-dihydroprogesterone (20-OHP) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were measured in ovarian venous plasma only. The concentrations of FSH and LH in the peripheral and ovarian venous plasma of the normal subjects in this study as well as of women using steroid contraceptives have been reported (16).…”

“…Smeaton & Robertson (1971) (Ginther, 1971) or indirectly by interfering with gonadotrophic hormones in the ovary (Llerena, Guevara, Lobotsky, Lloyd & Weisz, 1969). The end of the first growth wave occurs when the progesterone level has reached its maximum (Thorburn,Bassett & Smith,439 1969; Stabenfelt, Holt & Ewing, 1969 (Moore, Barrett, Brown, Schindler, Smith & Smyth, 1969).…”
