The present study provides a comprehensive survey of the planktonic hydrozoan fauna from the Paranaguá Estuarine System (PES; southern Brazil, 25°S 48°W), a subtropical estuary considered a Natural World Heritage site by UNESCO. Extensive collections were performed throughout the estuary in five sampling campaigns during the summer and winter periods of 2012 and 2013 and summer of 2014, totalling 185 samples. About 49,000 organisms were analysed which together with the few previous records resulted in a total of 36 hydromedusae and three siphonophore species. We highlight the presence of Cnidostoma fallax in high abundance (>19,000 individuals captured; ~40% of all planktonic hydrozoans). The high abundance of this species throughout three consecutive summers suggests a change in the local assemblage structure, since previous reports in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s had shown Liriope tetraphylla recurrently as the dominant species which now ranks fourth. It is difficult to ascertain the causes of such changes due to the paucity of previous studies on Brazilian estuaries, but one possibility is that C. fallax has been recently introduced. In any case, the high dominance of this hydromedusa was not expected and this scenario would potentially cause changes in the local food web since C. fallax and L. tetraphylla are quite different morphologically and ecologically and thus probably play different trophic roles. Future studies are necessary to check the long-term permanency of C. fallax and to assess its biology and ecology and the impact of this assemblage change on the ecosystem.

Podocoryna loyola, a new hydractiniid species, has been found on artificial substrates in Baía de Paranaguá, southern coast of Brazil, since April 2007. Its main morphological characteristics are: (1) polymorphic colonies with reticular stolons or encrusting hydrorhiza not covered by periderm and smooth chitinous spines; (2) newly-released medusae with eight tentacles and small interradial gonads; (3) mature medusae with eight tentacles and unbranched oral lips; gastric peduncle absent. Molecular data show that P. loyola is distinct from all other examined species of Podocoryna, and from P. hayamaensis Hirohito (1988), its sister species from Japan. As the polyps having been noted only quite recently, and in having been found only on man-made objects in port areas and estuaries, the species is most likely exotic to the region.

Fauna de cnidários do Ecossistema Babitonga: uma revisão crítica

Foi realizada uma ampla revisão da literatura sobre a cnidofauna do Ecossistema Babitonga (EB). Os trabalhos na região são poucos e recentes (95% realizados na última década), com o total de vinte e dois estudos, incluindo literatura cinza (11) e publicações em revistas científicas indexadas (11), sendo a região estuarina mais estudada que a plataforma. São registradas 113 espécies (18 Anthozoaria, 95 Medusozoa), dentre as quais oito espécies são exóticas. Não há informações sobre a influência da cnidofauna na economia e comunidade marinha do EB e trabalhos de perspectiva biológica e ecológica do grupo servirão de base para suprir essas lacunas. Sugere-se também monitoramento da biodiversidade local considerando que o EB está susceptível a introduções de espécies exóticas devido às atividades portuárias e maricultura, bem como proximidade com regiões já invadidas por espécies com elevado potencial invasor e de modificação da comunidade nativa.
