Computing Vegetation Indices from the Satellite Images Using GRASS GIS Scripts for Monitoring Mangrove Forests in the Coastal Landscapes of Niger Delta, Nigeria

Abstract: This paper addresses the issue of the satellite image processing using GRASS GIS in the mangrove forests of the Niger River Delta, southern Nigeria. The estuary of the Niger River Delta in the Gulf of Guinea is an essential hotspot of biodiversity on the western coast of Africa. At the same time, climate issues and anthropogenic factors affect vulnerable coastal ecosystems and result in the rapid decline of mangrove habitats. This motivates monitoring of the vegetation patterns using advanced cartographic meth… Show more

“…These factors make EVI suitable in areas with dense vegetation such as the GGB. EVI data have been used to monitor vegetation change in other regions with dense vegetation (Adams & Garcia‐Carreras, 2023), monitor changes in Mangrove Forests in the GGB (Lemenkova & Debeir, 2023) and to measure vegetation change across African cities (Yao et al, 2019). EVI data were obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite MOD13A1 V6 product at a temporal resolution of 16 days and 250 m spatial resolution from 2000 to 2020.…”

“…At the same time, ANN methods and scripting libraries are promising tools for cartographic tasks and image processing for mapping areas of coastal lagoons, which are notable for the high complexity of land cover patterns and the heterogeneity of landscapes [39][40][41][42][43][44]. In this regard, GRASS GIS presents a powerful cartographic toolset that includes diverse modules that can be used for satellite image processing [45]. Hence, besides the traditional general-purpose programming languages, GRASS GIS is also used for creation.…”

“…The programming is implemented in the GRASS GIS as scripts. This automates the repeated steps of image processing to improve the workflow [101,102]. The data processing was performed on the MacBook Apple Sonoma (arm64 architecture).…”
