Objective To identify and synthesize evidence on the barriers and facilitators to older adults’ acceptance of camera-based active and assisted living (AAL) technologies in the home. Introduction Camera-based AAL technologies have been heralded as an important solution to population ageing. By leveraging state-of-the-art computer vision techniques, camera-based AAL technologies can secure greater levels of safety, health, and independence for older adults whilst benefiting their desires to age-in-place. However, these technologies face widespread rejection and are at present scarcely used. A critical first step toward enhancing older adults’ acceptance and uptake of camera-based AAL technologies is to understand the barriers and facilitators to their acceptance of said technology. Inclusion criteria This review will consider primary studies reporting data on the barriers and facilitators to the acceptance of camera-based AAL technologies among community-dwelling older adults aged 60 and above. No date or language restrictions will be applied. Methods Following JBI scoping review methodology, key electronic databases (e.g., MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore) and the grey literature (e.g., Google Scholar) will be searched to locate both unpublished and published articles of relevance. Retrieved citations will undergo independent screening against pre-defined eligibility criteria. Data will be independently extracted and mapped to the Theoretical Domains Framework with guidance from a pre-piloted coding manual. Results will be presented in tabular form accompanied by a narrative summary of barriers and facilitators.

Deriving a person's energy expenditure accurately forms the foundation for tracking physical activity levels across many health and lifestyle monitoring tasks. In this study, the authors present a method for estimating calorific expenditure from combined visual and accelerometer sensors by way of an RGB-Depth camera and a wearable inertial sensor. The proposed individual-independent framework fuses information from both modalities which leads to improved estimates beyond the accuracy of single modality and manual metabolic equivalents of task (MET) lookup table based methods. For evaluation, the authors introduce a new dataset called SPHERE_RGBD + Inertial_calorie, for which visual and inertial data are simultaneously obtained with indirect calorimetry ground truth measurements based on gas exchange. Experiments show that the fusion of visual and inertial data reduces the estimation error by 8 and 18% compared with the use of visual only and inertial sensor only, respectively, and by 33% compared with a MET-based approach. The authors conclude from their results that the proposed approach is suitable for home monitoring in a controlled environment.

Active and assisted living technologies are much needed, but some aspects of them cause user rejection due to concerns on privacy. This is even more concerning to users when visual information is used, processed, and transmitted. To respond to these concerns, and maximise user acceptance, visual privacy protection measures have to be put in place. In the past, human detection and object segmentation in video were constrained by technological limitations, and could only run with specific hardware and sensors. This paper introduces a proposal for an RGB-only based visual privacy preservation filter, which capitalises on 'deep learning'-based segmentation and pose detectors. A background update scheme is presented, which limits leakage of sensitive information when detection fails. Dilation of the mask can further prevent information leakage, but a trade-off is necessary to correctly update background information. This is achieved via a specific study which is also presented. A comparative study is performed to determine the best configuration for privacy preservation. Results show that union of dilated masks from different deep networks achieves the best overall result.
