Computer Use in Agriculture: Evidence from Tulare County, California

Abstract: Logit analysis using data from a survey of Tulare County, California, farmers is used to examine computer and application ownership patterns in agriculture. The analysis indicates that the size ofthe farming operation, education level, age level, and the ownership of a farm-related nonfarming business significantly influence the probability of computer ownership; however, the type of farm products used on the farm does not. The type of application software owned is influenced primarily by the type of farm prod… Show more

“…Scholars in the field of ICT have drawn heavily on theoretical work in social and cognitive psychology, as well as sociology, in studying user acceptance. This phenomenon is argued by Bandura (1986) Salampasis et al,(2002), Mbowa and Mugisha (2004) and also Ernst and Tucker (2002) In term of manager's ages, Putler and Zilberman, (2001) argued that age has a significant effect on Computer adoption. The pattern of adoption increase up to age group of 36-40, then adoption begins to decrease with age.…”

“…The literature on technology adoption suggests that operators of larger farms and farmers with greater formal education are more likely to be early adopters (Rogers 1983). For high technology such as computers and information technologies, younger farmers also are often found to be early adopters (Batte, Jones, andSchnitkey 1990, Putler andZilberman 1988). We included interactions of operator age, education (post-high school = 1), and farm size (gross sales) with both ∆OnlineStore and ∆NationalStore.…”

“…and business (business sizecomplexity etc.) factors have been identified, among others, as responsible for differentiating Information Technology (IT) and Internet adoption rates (Amponsah, 1995, Huffman and Mercier, 1991, Jarvis, 1990and Putler and Zilberman, 1988. Due to these factors, Internet's level of use in the agri-food industry varies, and a huge gap seems to exist between large and SME's: large companies are moving towards Web-based supply chain integration, while for the majority of SME's, Internet is just another communication tool, finding limited applicability in other companies' activities, such as…”
