Computer support for collaborative data analysis

Abstract: The traditional paper-based affinity diagram is a powerful tool for collaborative qualitative data analysis, but the present paper-based process has limitations. In this work we describe how users work with paper-based affinity diagrams as uncovered through a set of interviews with professionals who use the method. We also present an early prototype system to provide computer support for paperbased affinities.

“…Koh and Su [19] created an affinity diagram authoring environment that provides an infinitely large workspace to post and organize notes, dynamic group layout and repositioning, meaningful zoom levels for navigation (i.e., to fit note, group of notes or selection area), ways to save, restore and export diagrams (JPEG), as well as ways to search for notes and groups (i.e., by text matching and related words). The main disadvantages of these tools include a lack of support for collaboration (i.e., single user) and having to do things in a certain structured way [10].…”

“…We have also experimented with using different digital note types in our evaluations of prototypes A to E (T able 1). First, digital affinity notes are typed on person al computers, then printed on paper, and each note is individually cut with scissors [10] (Fig. 1c).…”

“…To help inform early concepts and to guide further study, informal interviews were held with seven participants about their affinity diagramming practices and experiences [6]. I later conducted semi-structured interviews with fourteen participants.…”

“…User research usually produces large amounts of data, which can be difficult to integrate into actionable design insights [3,21]. Paper-based affinity diagramming provides a tangible method of organizing observations and interview results according to semantic similarity [2,9,12,16]. Usually, this is a team-based activity with the goal to "make sense out of the data" [21,29].…”
