Computer simulation to determine food irradiation dose levels

Abstract: This study provides the algorithm for the estimation of the dose absorbed by minced trout and pieces of chilled trout during 1 MeV electron irradiation. The algorithm uses programming code GEANT 4 based on Monte-Carlo method. The simulation takes into account the electron spectrum as well as the geometry samples. Ferrous sulfate (Fricke) dosimeter and film dosimetry were used to check the algorithm and control the dose parameters during irradiation. The difference between dose rate measured by Fricke dosimeter… Show more

“…The experiment was repeated three times for both types of seeds for all doses. The dose absorbed by the samples was estimated using the algorithm described in [15], taking into account the time of exposure, beam current, and charge absorbed by the plate during each irradiation session, seen in table 1. Flax seeds were irradiated with the doses of 0, 5, 10, 30, 50 and 100 Gy, wheat seeds were treated with the doses of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200 and 300 Gy.…”

“…The parameters of the beam modifier as well as dose distribution values were calculated using a computer simulation based on the Monte-Carlo method. Source code GEANT 4 used in experiments was developed in CERN especially for simulation of physical processes behind irradiation [21][22].…”

“…The doses absorbed by potato tubers were determined using computer simulation with the program code GEANT 4, based on the Monte Carlo method. The simulation was carried out taking into account the geometry of the samples and the technical characteristics of the accelerator, such as the spectrum of electrons obtained from it, in line with the method described in [18].…”
