Computer forensics programs in higher education

Abstract: This paper presents a preliminary survey of computer forensics programs in North America. It summarizes existing requirements for associate, bachelor's, and master's degree programs as well as certificate programs. It briefly discusses factors which must be considered when introducing a new program (curriculum design, faculty, students, facilities, and budget).

“…This definition is reinforced Gottschalk et al (2005) as "computer forensics deals with identifying, preserving, recovering, analysing and documenting computer data allegedly used in crimes committed using computers". It is very likely that there will be situations where measurement science devices could provide digital evidence in the collection, validation and identification activities in digital forensics and possibly in the analysis phase of digital forensic investigations.…”

“…Digital Investigation as a branch of forensic science Both Berghel (2003) and Gottschalk et al (2005) have pointed out that since forensic principles are used in digital investigations, the subject should be construed as a branch of forensic science. Indeed, the handling of digital investigation cases shares many similarities with evidence handling in forensic science.…”

“…Some programs are provided as part of a forensic science program. Others are offered separately at different levels-associate degree programs, certificate programs, baccalaureate programs, or graduate programs [Gottschalk et al 2005]. It should be noted that none of the academic programs in computer forensics are tied to any of the certifications even though in some cases certification-granting associations are associated with certain tertiary institutions 9 or officials of certification-granting associations teach at certain institutions.…”
