Computer calculations of target parameters for a stereotactic apparatus

Abstract: SummaryI~iechert and Mundinger's stereotactic apparatus (1956) has been modified and partly reconstructed so that the parameters of different target points, adopted during a single procedure, can be immediately calculated by a computer. The mathematicM foundations and derivations are given. The expansion of clinical information regarding stereotaetic brain operations employing multiple target points during one operation provides an opportunPuy to include computer calculations in the operative procedure 5.

“…After having done several tests we chose a special plastic material whose torsion model and mechanical stability withstands the extreme forces and at the same time mini mizes the artifacts in the MRI picture. Figure 1 shows this plastic ring whose dimensions correspond exactly with the stereotactic ring made from metal, so all the additional equipment of our stereotactic de vice [1,9] fit exactly. The patient's head is fixed by movable plastic attachments carrying the plastic screws tipped with sharp points made from quartz or steel.…”

“…In order to utilize the great diagnostic potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) we developed a method to adapt the Riechert-Mundinger stereotactic device [9], including the computer com patible modification of Birg and Mundinger [ 1], for use with MRI. In principle, the method holds true for all the other stereotactic devices.…”

“…Practical considerations come into play when computing these stereotactic trajecto ries, when one employs the software of Birg and Mundinger [3]. Mathematically, the pos terior fossa mass lies within the anterior quadrants of the stereotactic.…”
