Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing Tailored for Special Populations and Topics

Abstract: Self-administered questionnaires have many advantages, especially when sensitive questions are asked. However, self-administered paper questionnaires have a serious drawback: Only relatively simple questionnaires can be used. Computerassisted self-interviewing (CASI) can overcome these problems. CASI can be part of a personal interview in which the interviewer hands the computer over to the respondent for specific questions. It also can be a computerized version of the disk-by-mail survey. The authors have use… Show more

“…Across many studies, data obtained via ACASI have been shown to be accurate, valid, and reliable. As other authors have indicated, ACASI can be used to collect data from a broad range of individuals (de Leeuw, Hox, & Kef, 2003). We have used ACASI to collect data primarily from adult men and women and adolescents.…”

“…75 Using mixed survey administration has been demonstrated to be effective in the visually impaired population, and indeed necessary in some cases, resulting in good data quality. 76 Future research should: i) use a run-in period with more than one visit prior to randomization to promote enrollment of participants who are likely to return for multiple study visits, ii) develop strategies to improve motivation, and iii) accommodate busy schedules with various class options to help increase and facilitate participation in the AYT. A future randomized controlled trial could determine whether the AYT is capable of producing a specific beneficial result (i.e.…”

“…For example, in Aboud's review of race-of-examiner effects, she suggests that this effect might be more salient for younger children as they have a higher need for adult approval than older children (Aboud, 1988). One technique that holds promise for minimizing race-of-examiner effects and controlling for social desirability is audio computer-assisted selfinterviewing [A-CASI] (Borgers, de Leeuw, & Hox, 2000;de Leeuw, Hox, & Kef, 2003). A-CASI is a technique in which a computerized voice-over reads the question to the respondent, ensuring that questions are delivered verbatim and voice inflection of the narrator is constant and consistent.…”
