Computer-Assisted CT-Guided Stereotactic Biopsy and Brachytherapy of Brain Tumors

Abstract: From March 1991 to September 1993, 26 patients (aged 4–78 years) with brain tumors (4 glioblastoma multiforme, 10 nonglioblastoma multiforme, 1 mixed oligoastrocytoma, 2 carniopharyngiomas, 2 meningiomas and 7 metastases) were treated with stereotactic techniques at the Centro Internacional de Restauracion Neurológica, La Habana, Cuba. A total of 28 stereotactic surgical procedures were performed with no operative mortality; they included biopsies in all cases, 1 stereotactic microsurgical resection and 12 per… Show more

“…The principle of stereotactic biopsy of ICSOL had evolved over years ever since Horsly and Clarke [4] performed the first stereotactic brain biopsy on the cerebellum of a rat and Spiegel and Wycis, later in 1947, displayed their first human SB using three-dimensional coordinate system using intracranial landmark defined by pneumoencephalography. [5] Maroon et al first reported CT-guided stereotactic system in 1977. [6] In most such cases, conclusive diagnosis can be established by SBs alone.…”

“…This in turn can be translated from space localization to the target set point in a patient. The principle has evolved over years ever since Horsely and Clarke 14 performed the fi rst stereotactic brain biopsy on the cerebellum of a rat and Spiegel-Wycis, later in 1947, displayed their fi rst human stereotactic technique using three dimensional coordinate system using intracranial land mark defi ned by pneumoencephalography 22 . Maroon et al fi rst reported CT guided stereotactic system in 1977.…”
