Computer-aided economic evaluation of pectin extraction from cocoa pod husk (Theobroma cacao L.)

Abstract: Pectin is a complex mixture of polysaccharides widely applied in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. The increasing demand of pectin has caused the search of raw materials for extracting process such as cocoa husks, sisal waste, peach pomace, banana peel and Citrullus lanatus fruit rinds. In this research, economic feasibility was applied for industrial implementation of pectin extraction process from cocoa pod husk (Theobroma cacao L.) by hydrolysis with citric acid using commercial software Aspen Plu… Show more

“…Scaling-up of pectin extraction from CPH can also be economically feasible, provided that two fundamental steps are considered; the preparation of the raw material (drying and decreasing particle size) and acid used in the hydrolysis (citric acid). If the direct and indirect costs of facilities are also considered, this would give an internal rate of return of 33% and a 4 years investment recovery, which indicates its profitability [61].…”

“…The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) database was used to obtain data on physicochemical lignin and cellulose properties [22]. Concerning pectin, the molecular structure of the pectin monomer was designed in the program, and its properties were estimated according to Lopez et al (2017) [23]. The remaining components listed in Table 1 are available in the Aspen library and were added to the simulation.…”

“…Nowadays, the environmental sustainability of processes is in the scientific community spotlight. Agricultural residues can provide large amounts of biomass as feedstock for biofuel and bioenergy production [5,8]. Agricultural biomass residues are composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin and possess a highenergy content [3].…”
