Computer Adaptive Test as The Appropriate Model to Assess Physics Achievement in 21st Century

Abstract: Most paper-based assessment tests require students to answer all of the test items and take much time for feedbacks. Therefore, more practical, efficient, and accurate assessment model needs to be developed. This study aims to describe (1) the superiority of Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) compared to Computer Based Test (CBT) and Paper and Pencil Test (PPT) and (2) the feasibility of CAT to measure achievement in physics. The study was conducted using the following procedures: comparing Item Respond Theory (IRT)… Show more

“…All of this would be unachievable in linear paper-and-pencil testing. So adaptive testing exceeds the functionality of the original test and significantly increases the diagnostic sensitivity of a given test [ 10 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. For example, dimensions of cognitive capacity and their limits can be measured more accurately, allowing more sensitive testing procedures to be developed.…”

“…For the first, that is, calibrating item difficulty, we used item response theory (IRT). For the second component we constructed an algorithm to choose the subsequent item based on the participant’s performance on earlier items (see below for details) [ 13 , 22 , 23 ]. In addition to its many advantages, CAT has some disadvantages as well.…”

“…Online or computerbased tests have advantages, namely that they are easy to access, the results of these tests are immediately known, and are more efficient [13]. Assessment using Paper Based Test (PBT) is slowly being replaced by computer-based assessments [14]. Google form can be used to create CBT.…”

“…In the industrial revolution 4.0 era, the development in educational assessment has changed rapidly, especially in the fields of education and technology. One of the alterations that occurred in the assessment using the Paper and Pencil Test (PPT) began to be replaced by an assessment called the Computer Based Test (CBT) [10]. The use of CBT allows flexibility, paperless, saving time, and making it easier to assess [11].…”
