Computed tomography imaging of complications of acute cholecystitis

Abstract: Acute cholecystitis (AC) is a frequent complication of biliary cholelithiasis. Although ultrasound is the first diagnostic imaging procedure, frequently the initial imaging modality is computed tomography (CT). Therefore, familiarization of CT findings in AC and potential related complications are extremely important. This pictorial essay reviews a broad spectrum of complications related to AC and its key findings in CT.

“…Today, complications of the gallbladder have decreased thanks to the early diagnosis and treatment of cholecystitis. Gangrenous cholecystitis is a serious complication of EC (10,11). In our case, acute abdomen accompanied by constipation first suggested ileus.…”

“…Right Upper Quadrant Ultrasound (RUQ U/S) continues to be the first step in diagnostic imaging, which shows gallbladder wall thickening, indicative of cholecystitis [11]. There is some difficulty visualizing cholecystitis complications on U/S, so Computed Tomography (CT) is often used to make an early diagnosis [12]. Studies show that early cholecystectomy is effective and can lower the mortality of cholecystitis [13].…”

“…The main complications associated with gallstones are acute cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis, acute pancreatitis, and cholangitis, leading to liver abscesses (5) . These complications occur due to the calculus migration and its impaction into the cystic duct or the central bile duct (choledochal) (6) .…”
