Computed tomography diagnosis of tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica

Abstract: Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TO) is a rare benign disease characterized by the presence of osseous and cartilaginous submucosal nodules projecting into the tracheobronchial tree. Most cases are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally at post-mortem. We identified a case of TO on thoracic spiral CT and confirmed the diagnosis of bronchoscopy. This article reviews the imaging characteristics of TO, and shows the 3-D virtual bronchoscopic and multiplanar reconstruction appearances of TO.

“…Endobronchial sarcoidosis can also present with nodular lesions of the trachea. Posterior wall involvement of trachea increases the suspicion for polychondritis, sarcoidosis, amyloidosis and papillomatosis (29,30). Diffuse calcification of trachea can also be seen in elderly patients or patients with tuberculosis, chondrosarcoma, Wegener's granulomatosis and fibroma (5,31).All of these conditions should be kept in mind while making the diagnosis of TBPOCP.…”

“…TO was previously an incidental finding at autopsy due to its usually benign progression and lack of typical symptoms. It is presently increasingly discovered through bronchoscopy and/or chest computed tomography (CT) [5].…”

“…El diagnóstico clínico de TOC no es fácil. Es probable que la incidencia de TOC sea mucho mayor a la conocida y descrita en la bibliografía [11] ya que es una condición que se diagnostica de forma incidental. Los síntomas (cuando se presentan) se superponen con los de otras patologías más frecuentes y la TOC no es tenida en cuenta, la mayor parte de las veces, como hipótesis diagnóstica.…”
