Computed tomography–assisted management of a mandibular dentigerous cyst in a dog with a nasal carcinoma

Abstract: Images obtained during sequential CT evaluations performed after radiation treatment of nasal carcinoma should be examined for evidence of the primary neoplasm as well as to detect unrelated lesions of the orofacial region that can compromise the quality of life. Findings of CT evaluations can be used to determine when and how to initiate treatment for dentigerous cysts in regard to the patient's response to radiation treatment.

“…Traumatic rupture during dacryocystorhinography could not be ruled out even though contrast medium was injected carefully. Computed tomography was elected in this case to determine the exact position of the tooth and define surgical options and a possible approach . Similar cases of unerupted teeth have been described in human literature in which the teeth were endoscopically or surgically removed .…”

“…11 Radiographically, dentigerous cysts display an unerupted tooth within a radiolucent defect surrounded by a thin, well-defined radiopaque margin along the cortical bone. 5,6,8,13 For larger lesions associated with advanced lysis of the mandible, decompression and marsupialization can be performed followed by excision at a later date. 5 Histologically, the cysts are lined by non-keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium that is 4-6 cell layers thick.…”

“…5 Although dentigerous cysts are more often unilocular, they can be multilocular, as in this case. 8,13,14 The disadvantages of incomplete excision are recurrence, continued bony destruction, and possible malignant transformation. 8 Histology is essential to confirm the diagnosis, since a small number of lesions may actually be odontogenic keratocysts, or infection.…”

“…3). [7][8][9][10] Reasons for a diffusely discolored tooth include, but are not limited to, periodontal-endodontic lesions, blunt trauma, systemic bacterial infection, internal root resorption, and hyperthermia from an ultrasonic scaler or rough polishing techniques. There was no evidence of periapical bone loss, external root resorption, or widening of the pulp cavity of 304.…”
