Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Appearance of Sporadic Meningioangiomatosis Correlated With Pathological Findings

Abstract: Gyriform hyperintensity on FLAIR sequence is the main MRI feature of MA, which correlates with proliferating microvessels with perivascular cuffs of spindle-cell proliferation within the cortex on pathological analysis. Plain CT scan is essential to demonstrate the extent of calcification of these lesions.

“…28,29 MA has a more gyriform hyperintensity on MRI fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences and tends to be smaller and have more heterogeneous contrast enhancement than meningiomas. 30 However, imaging alone cannot confirm the diagnosis, and biopsy is still necessary. Most cases have been followed with serial imaging, without significant clinical or tumor progression.…”

“…MA can be even more diverse in its presentation on imaging because of the different morphologies that lesion can assume; for example, MA can be gyriform [2, 3, 2330], or can be associated with a cystic component [3, 11, 13, 19, 25, 3133]. Some studies proposed certain properties that may help clinician in diagnosing lesion via imaging.…”

“…Some studies proposed certain properties that may help clinician in diagnosing lesion via imaging. Yao et al concluded that gyriform hyperintensity on a FLAIR sequence is the main MRI feature of MA [30]. Rokes et al suggested the possibility of using magnetic resonance spectroscopy and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in helping with the diagnosis of MA [34].…”

“…It is usually a single cortical lesion; however, multifocal non-cortical cases have been reported [6,7]. Sporadic meningioangiomatosis is usually a single lesion occurring in young adults or children, who present with seizures or headache [6,8].…”
