Computed tomographic identification of calcified optic nerve drusen.

Abstract: Four cases of optic disk drusen were accurately diagnosed with orbital computed tomography (CT). The radiologist should be aware of the characteristic CT finding of discrete calcification within an otherwise normal optic disk. This benign process is easily differentiated from lesions such as calcific neoplastic processes of the posterior globe. CT identification of optic disk drusen is essential in the evaluation of visual field defects, migraine-like headaches, and pseudopapilledema.

“…Various ancillary tests, including B-scan ultrasonography, 55; 105; 151; 168 fundus autofluorescence, 95; 140; 145 orbital computed tomography (CT) scan, 12; 131; 162 fluorescein angiography (FA), 24; 159; 177 scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, 75; 103; 187 electrophysiology, 17; 18; 23; 142; 186 and more recently optical coherence tomography (OCT), 31; 88; 112; 125; 215 have been used to identify optic disc drusen. These tests may be less useful in children who typically have buried drusen that are more difficult to detect.…”

“…12; 82; 105; 131; 162; 217 Like B-scan ultrasonography, CT detects calcification of drusen. It is limited by the 1.5 mm thickness of slices, which may miss drusen, and has been shown to be inferior to ultrasonography.…”

“…16C). 27 Retinal detachment tamponade is a procedure in which the posterior segment is filled with silicone oil or gaseous compounds (eg, air or sulfur hexaflouride) in order to appose the detached ocular wall layers. On MDCT, silicone oil is hyperattenuating, and the gaseous compounds have air attenuation.…”
