Computed tomographic features of the bony canal of the cochlear nerve in pediatric patients with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss

Abstract: Most (60%) of the patients with unilateral SNHL showed a significant difference in the diameters of the bony canals of the cochlear nerve between the affected and unaffected sides; moreover, the mean value was significantly smaller in affected ears. The diameter of < 1.7 mm on transverse images or < 1.8 mm on coronal images suggests hypoplasia.

“…Previously, BCNC length and width ranged from 0.93-1.17 mm and from 1.88-2.13 mm, respectively, in normal hearing inner ears ( table 5 ) [Fatterpekar et al, 2000;Komatsubara et al, 2007;Kono, 2008]. In this study, BCNC length and width in normal inner ears measured 1.07 and 2.38 mm, respectively.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, our study encompasses the largest data in terms of BCNC length and width. Presently, BCNC length and width in the affected inner ears (group C) of congenital USNHL were significantly smaller than those of normal hearing inner ears (group A), while previous publications reported the same tendency in terms of width [Komatsubara et al, 2007;Kono, 2008]. The width in the affected inner ears in our study measured 1.58 mm, whereas it was previously reported to be 1.12 and 1.0 mm [Komatsubara et al, 2007;Kono, 2008].…”

“…The most appropriate radiological imaging option for investigating bony inner ear structures is temporal bone CT. Evidence has suggested an association between SNHL and narrowed inner ear structures, such as BCNC [7,8] . BCNC is described as a bony transition canal that is located between IAC and cochlear modiolus (Figure 4) [9] .…”
