Computational Modeling and Analysis of the Role of Physical Activity in Mood Regulation and Depression

Abstract: Abstract. Physical activity is often considered an important factor in handling mood regulation and depression. This paper presents a computational model of this role of physical activity in mood regulation. It is shown on the one hand how a developing depression can go hand in hand with a low level of physical activity, and on the other hand, how Exercise Therapy is able to reverse this pattern and make the depression disappear. Simulation results are presented, and properties are formally verified against th… Show more

“…On the other hand a model-based approach is used to estimate the current influence and future developments of a therapy on a patient. By means of computational simulation of states associated with depression and therapeutic models [6], [2], [5], [4] (a so-called virtual patient [3]), a tailored feedback and therapeutic advice is provided to the patient. This advice is either meant to stimulate a patient and improve his involvement in the therapy, or to suggest the patient to perform a different type of therapy.…”

“…In addition, the therapeutic influence is also modeled. The models incorporated in the virtual patient prediction component are described in more detail in [15,16,17]. As an input for these models, the characteristics for the patient as provided in a questionnaire are used.…”

“…The physical state influences the mood level positively and learning the relation between these concepts increases the coping skills. For more details on the mood model and the models of the different therapies, see ([5], [6], [7])…”
