Computational methods for the dynamics of the nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross–Pitaevskii equations

Abstract: In this paper, we begin with the nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation (NLSE/GPE) for modeling Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and nonlinear optics as well as other applications, and discuss their dynamical properties ranging from time reversible, time transverse invariant, mass and energy conservation, dispersion relation to soliton solutions. Then, we review and compare different numerical methods for solving the NLSE/GPE including finite difference time domain methods and time-splitting spectral … Show more

“…If ν = 0, then we will speak about the time-dependent Linear Schrödinger Equation (LSE). In the Physics literature, the first equation of system (1) is also called the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation (GPE) [2,11,16], when considering Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) (see e.g. [38,39]).…”

“…f (|ψ| 2 ) = β |ψ| 2 ). However, it is not invariant under gauge transformation and the dispersive relation does not hold [10,35]. The computational cost is O(M log M) since we again use FFTs.…”

“…The major disadvantages of this scheme are that it is conditionally stable and it does not satisfy most of the properties from Section 4.1 (see [10]). In Section 1.3 (page 11), we have seen that a change of variables is used for modeling a rotating condensate.…”
