Computational geometry‐based methodology for identification of potential islanding initiators in high solar PV penetration distribution feeders

Abstract: Accidental disconnection of a live feeder section is a major concern accompanying large distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) generation integration. High localised penetration can alter power flows leading to anomalous occurrences. Load-inverter power balance during grid-side disturbances, for different load models, may cause unique situations that can trigger the interconnection point protective devices. One such phenomenon, identified as a potential cause of unintentional islanding on radial feeder models (a … Show more

“…Taking into account also the recent advancement in computing capability and communication systems, hybrid islanding detection techniques, based on combinations of the four categories previously discussed, represent the most promising techniques [115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125]. Starting from combination or modification of conventional methods, in [115] some islanding detection methods are proposed as integration of well-known passive methods.…”

“…Moving towards more innovative solutions, in [121] a new islanding detection technique is based on the addition of a variable impedance and a hybrid automatic transfer switch. In [122] computational geometry has been applied to derive an islanding detection technique based on a classifier module. As in case of the active methods, the technique discussed in [123] uses harmonic current injection.…”

“…Human actions, including fossil fuel emissions, have contributed to the massive release into the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, which are interrupting the global carbon cycle and are contributing to global warming [1][2][3][4]. The transportation sector is responsible for a large share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide.…”

“…A thorough review of literature for ‘strategies for control for the solar PV integration with grid systems’ shows lately, research studies have introduced a variety of adaptive control techniques [11–41], such as control based on learning, adaptive fuzzy control, control based on power delta method etc. Still, their results on different abnormal conditions of distribution grid performance are not reported, which is an important parameter to deal with.…”
