Computational design of actuated deformable characters

Abstract: Figure 1: We present a method to convert animated digital characters into physically fabricated prototypes. Our physical characters can be actuated using pins, strings, or posed by hand. AbstractWe present a method for fabrication-oriented design of actuated deformable characters that allows a user to automatically create physical replicas of digitally designed characters using rapid manufacturing technologies. Given a deformable character and a set of target poses as input, our method computes a small set of … Show more

“…Some early work on 3D printing multi-material meta-materials has been demonstrated by Bickel et al [2010] and Skouras et al [Skouras et al 2013]. We show that our printer can fabricate even more complex multi-material metamaterials.…”

“…In this area, researchers have already developed a number of applications that specifically take advantage of printing with multiple materials. They have built processes for the design and fabrication of objects with desired deformation properties [Bickel et al 2010], objects with desired subsurface scattering [Dong et al 2010;Hašan et al 2010], lenticular prints [Tompkin et al 2013], and actuated deformable characters [Skouras et al 2013]. There has also been a significant interest in applications of multi-material 3D printing in other fields.…”

“…In future work, we would like to let users, both children and adults, freely design and print their own story worlds, including sets, props and characters [29] and turn their stories into movies using intelligent tools for 3D animation [30] and cinematography [31]. A variation of the Figurines framework has also been used in an experiment to monitor players while solving Chess problem [32].…”

“…As mentioned, these problems are common in engineering and graphics [Bendsoe and Sigmund 2003;Bickel et al 2010;Kou et al 2012;Skouras et al 2013;Chen et al 2013;Xu et al 2014]. We can broadly partition the space of approaches for optimizing FEM simulation into two categories.…”
