Computational aspects of the combined finite‐discrete element method in static and dynamic analysis of shell structures

Abstract: This paper demonstrates some computational aspects of two previously developed numerical models for a static and dynamic analysis of shells based on the combined finite‐discrete element method. The dynamic and static response of shells under various boundary conditions, mesh pattern and mesh refinement was analysed and compared with other numerical and analytical results in order to illustrate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed numerical models.

“…Up to date the finite-discrete element method found its application in analysis of many types of structures such as reinforced concrete structures, beam type structures, shell structures etc. [29][30][31][32][33]. The main processes included in the finite-discrete element method are contact detection, contact interaction, finite strain elasticity, as well as fracture and fragmentation.…”
