Computational analysis of the performance of ozone-friendly R22 alternative refrigerants in vapour compression air-conditioning systems

Abstract: Performance of two ozone-friendly refrigerants (R410A and R419A) was investigated theoretically using computational thermodynamic analysis. The results obtained showed that the performance of R410A was very close to that of R22 in all the operating conditions. Both R22 and R410A performed better than R419A in terms of their COP and refrigerating effect. Compared with R22, the average COP and refrigerating effect of R419A are lower by 13.78 and 33.96%, respectively. Generally, R410A refrigerant has approximatel… Show more

“…The data collected at different evaporating temperatures and the corresponding properties of refrigerants obtained using refrigerant database software known as REFPROP [20] were used to compute the following performance parameters (Eqs. 1 to 7): refrigerating effect (Q evap ), compressor work input (W comp ), condenser heat load (Q cond ), Coefficient of Performance (COP), Volumetric Cooling Capacity (VCC) and Pressure Ratio (PR).…”

“…The Volumetric Cooling Capacity (VCC, kJ/m 3 ) is the refrigerating effect per unit volume of refrigerant at the inlet of the compressor. It is a value calculated from the vapour density at the compressor's inlet and the enthalpy difference of the evaporation [20]:…”

“…In the literature, standard VCR cycle was mostly used while doing performance analysis of various alternative refrigerants and corresponding pressure–enthalpy (P-h) chart of the cycle is shown in Figure 3. 13,14,4245 The basic thermodynamic processes take place in standard VCR cycle are represented in Figure 3.

“…Residential air conditioners work on the principle of vapour compression refrigeration system. In majority of literature, thermodynamic analysis of air conditioners was done based on either simple saturation or standard vapour compression cycle [25][26][27][28]. The P-h diagram of standard vapour compression cycle is shown in Figure 4.…”
