Abstract. The integration of user-centred design and Agile development is becoming increasingly common in companies and appears promising. However, it may also present some critical points, or communication breakdowns, such as a variable interpretation of user involvement, a mismatch in the value of documentation, and a misalignment in iterations. We refine these themes, emerging from both literature and previous fieldwork, by analysing a case study performed in an IT company that adopts both software engineering approaches, and we further extend the framework with a new theme related to task ownership. We argue that communication breakdowns can become focal points to drive action and decision for establishing an organisational context acknowledging the value of user involvement: to this end, we suggest the adoption of design thinking and the active engagement of the customer in embracing its values.

Computational design is aimed at supporting or automating design processes using computational techniques. However, some classes of design tasks involve criteria that are di cult to handle only with computers. For example, visual design tasks seeking to ful ll aesthetic goals are di cult to handle purely with computers. One promising approach is to leverage human computation; that is, to incorporate human input into the computation process. Crowdsourcing platforms provide a convenient way to integrate such human computation into a working system.

Although the HCI community inevitably contributes to engagement via beauty according to the attention paid to known and yet to be discovered principles of aesthetics for digital interface design, it is lacking an epistemological corpus which should include the notion, human factors and the quantification of aesthetic aspects. The aim of the proposed workshop is to discuss these issues in order to strengthen aesthetic studies specifically for HCI and related fields. We want to create a forum for discussing, drafting and promoting the foundations for disciplined aesthetics design within the HCI community. We thus welcome contributions such as theories, methodologies, evaluation methods, and potential applications regarding effective aesthetics for HCI and related fields. Concretely, we aim to (i) map the present state-of-art of aesthetic research in HCI, (ii) build a multidisciplinary community of experts, and (iii) raise the profile of this aesthetics research area within HCI community.
