Computation of Interface Aesthetics

Abstract: People prefer attractive interfaces. Designers strive to outmatch competitors, and create apps and websites that stand out. However, significant expenses on design are unaffordable to small companies; instead, they could adopt automatic tools of interface aesthetics evaluation, a cheaper strategy to good design. This paper describes an important step towards such a tool; it presents eight automatic metrics of graphical user interface (GUI) aesthetics. We tested the metrics in two exploratory studies -on deskto… Show more

“…13,22] or more recent research on automatic usability evaluation tools [e.g. 21,31]. However, we remark that communication breakdowns are manifested at the work process level [4,5]: hence, we suggest that their solution could be found in a supportive organisational environment [5,8,11,17], whose fundamental importance is reiterated by the present study.…”

“…Yet, by focusing on very speci c design domains, it is possible to handle and optimize aesthetic criteria by rule-based approaches. For example, Miniukovich and Angeli [27] presented executable metrics of GUI aesthetics and showed its validity with a user study. Todi et al [44] applied similar metrics for optimizing GUI layout design.…”

“…Empirical studies and metrics-based computational methodologies [3,4] have been proposed to compute the degree of interface aesthetics, while most of them were expected to improve their quantitative performance. Here we will discuss current state-of-the-art qualitative and quantitative methodologies based on the features of surfaces and spaces.…”
