“…This shows a southward closure of the Pyrenean ocean on a Provençal transect, whereas a northward subduction took place on a Pyrenean transect (Vergés and Garcia-Senz, 2001), also recorded in Sardinia (Barca and Costamagna, 1997;Barca and Costamagna, 2000), but again a southward subduction took place westward in the Biscay ocean.…”

“…An Eocene NW‐SE shortening has been identified using striated microfaults, extensional veins, and stylolites [ Letouzey et al , 1982], mainly in the western part of the island. Trémolières et al [1984] and then Barca and Costamagna [1997] provide additional structural evidence of middle Eocene folding and thrusting, leading to the recognition of a Pyrenean front along the present‐day northwestern coast of Sardinia. These Sardinian structures can be considered as marking the eastern extension of the outermost part of the south Pyrenean zone.…”

“…These formations form the Produttivo Group (Figure ; Fadda et al, , and references therein). Then, during middle Eocene times, Sardinia was affected by the external deformations of the Pyrenean orogeny (Barca & Costamagna, , ). The erosion of this chain feeds continental deposits that form the Cixerri Formation, which is middle Eocene (early Lutetian: Agus & Pecorini, ; Pittau Demelia, ) to early Oligocene in age (Barca & Costamagna, , ; Maxia, ).…”

“…The Cixerri Formation in Southern Sardinia is the molasse system of the southern slopes of the Eastern Pyrenaic chain (Barca & Costamagna, , ; Cherchi, ). The Sardinia–Corsica block formed part of the Eastern Iberia microplate before the opening of the Algero–Provencal basin, and its western borders were partially involved in the Pyrenean tectonics (Barca & Costamagna, ).…”
