A behaviour-oriented model is proposed for the confinement effectiveness and strength enhancement of concrete under axial compression, passively confined by lateral reinforcement. The model is developed on the basis of three dimensional concrete constitutive law based FEM simulation results and idealized experimental results on laterally confined concrete cores. Confinement efficiency of lateral reinforcement layouts are quantified through a mechanically defined confinement effectiveness index, which is the ratio of induced spatial average confining stress to the maximum potential confinement capacity of lateral reinforcement arrangement. This index is represented by lateral reinforcement detailing as well as material parameters in the model. Influence from uniformity of confining reinforcement layouts on confinement effectiveness was identified through FEM simulation results, which is used to formulate the basic form of the model. Concept of lowest confined section is adopted to formulate the strength enhancement due to confinement, based on average confining stress and double effect of uniformity of lateral confinement layout.

In den vergangenen Jahren wurden verschiedene auf die Bemessung von Stahl‐ und Spannbetonbauteilen ausgerichtete theoretische Modelle entwickelt. Heute stehen das Zuggurtmodell, das Modell der gerissenen (Steg‐)Scheibe und das Druckgurtmodell zur Verfügung, auf deren Grundlage Verformungsverhalten und Tragwiderstände umfassend beurteilt werden können. Auf das Druckgurtmodell wird im vorliegenden Beitrag detailliert eingegangen. Es berücksichtigt die Festigkeits‐ und Duktilitätssteigerung durch eine Umschnürungsbewehrung sowie die bruchmechanisch begründete Entfestigung des Betons und die damit einhergehende Verformungslokalisierung. Auf der Grundlage neuerer Versuchsergebnisse können für die komplexen Interdependenzen zwischen diesen Effekten plausible Beziehungen angegeben werden. Die mithilfe des Druckgurtmodells gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sind für die Baupraxis von Bedeutung: Das Verhalten von auf Druck beanspruchten Bauteilen (z. B. Druckplatten von Brückenquerschnitten, Stützen) lässt sich zuverlässig erfassen; darüber hinaus ergeben sich wichtige Hinweise für die konstruktive Durchbildung. Compression Chord Model for Structural Concrete In recent years, several theoretical models have been developed with the scope on the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Today, the tension chord model, the cracked membrane model and the compression chord model are available, with which the deformation behaviour as well as ultimate loads can be determined. In the present contribution the compression chord model is discussed in detail. The model takes the increase of strength and ductility due to a confining reinforcement into account and considers the softening as well as the localisation of deformations accompanying the fracture of concrete. On the basis of new test results plausible relations for the complex interdependencies between these effects are found. The results of the compression chord model are relevant for practical applications: The behaviour of compressed members (e.g. in bridge girders or columns) can be assessed reliably; moreover, hints for the detailing of reinforcement can be deduced.

PrefaceThe present doctoral thesis was developed within the framework of the research project "Deformation Capacity of Structural Concrete". This project aims at developing a consistent and experimentally verified theory of the deformation capacity of structural concrete. Previous work included the development of a theoretical model, the so-called Tension Chord Model, which allows a comprehensive description of the load-deformation behaviour of tension members in non-prestressed and prestressed concrete structures.The present work focuses on a new theoretical model, the so-called Cracked Membrane Model. For members subjected to in-plane forces this new model combines the basic concepts of the modified compression field theory and the tension chord model. Crack spacings and tension stiffening effects in cracked membranes are determined from first principles and the link to plasticity theory methods is maintained since equilibrium conditions are formulated in terms of stresses at the cracks rather than average stresses between the cracks.The research project "Deformation Capacity of Structural Concrete" has been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Association of the Swiss Cement Producers. Simple, consistent physical models reflecting the influences of the governing parameters are developed on whose basis (i) a realistic assessment of the deformation capacity of structural concrete subjected to in-plane loading is possible, (ii) the limits of applicability of the theory of plasticity to structural concrete can be explored, and (iii) current design provisions can be critically reviewed, supplemented and harmonised.In the first part of this thesis relevant properties of concrete and reinforcement are examined, basic aspects of the theory of plasticity and its application to structural concrete are summarised, previous work on plane stress in structural concrete is reviewed, and fundamental aspects of the behaviour of cracked concrete membranes are investigated.In the second part a new model for cracked, orthogonally reinforced concrete panels subjected to a homogeneous state of plane stress is presented. The cracked membrane model combines the basic concepts of original compression field approaches and a recently developed tension chord model.
