Compression neuropathy of common peroneal nerve caused by a popliteal cyst

Abstract: Rationale:Popliteal cyst developing in the sheath of a peripheral nerve or joint capsule may cause compression neuropathy. Although popliteal cyst is very common lesion, it seldom causes serious complications. Common peroneal nerve compression is rarely caused by an extraneural popliteal cyst.Patient concerns:We presented the case of a 52-year-old female with common peroneal nerve compression caused by an extraneural popliteal cyst.Diagnoses:Electromyography showed the damage of common peroneal nerve. MRI magn… Show more

“…Table 2 summarizes case reports of the cyst around knee that were previously reported according to the classification. [ 10 , 11 , 14 , 16 , 19 23 ] To our knowledge, our case is the first report of compressive peroneal neuropathy caused by extraneural type of ganglion cyst in the supracondylar area of femur. Ganglion cyst compressions of the peroneal nerve can be classified as intraneural or extraneural lesions.…”

“…Bununla birlikte, proksimalde siyatik çentikte, distalde fibula boynunda fikse olması ve bacağın ön yüzüne doğru yönelirken yaptığı dik açılı dönüş, kompresyon nöropatisine duyarlı hale gelmesine neden olur (13) . Cerrahi (total diz artroplastisi, yüksek tibial osteotomi), travma (kontüzyon, gerilme ve ezilme yaralanmaları), diz bükme alışkanlığı, çömelme veya diz üstüne çökerek çalışma pozisyonu, yumuşak doku tümörleri, ganglion kistleri, kilo kaybı gibi birçok neden peroneal sinir nöropatisine neden olabilir (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10) .…”

“…CPN compression secondary to a cystic tibiofibular joint was reported in various cases. 41,[43][44][45] Two such cases described CPN compression due to intraneural ganglion and synovial cysts. 41,45 Complete return of motor function was accomplished via cyst aspiration in one case, while the other was treated with prompt surgical cyst removal and nerve decompression.…”
