Compression garments and fabric orthoses for rehabilitation and function: a systematic mapping review

Abstract: Background/aims Compression garments, joint supports and dynamic movement orthoses all use elastic fibres and close-fitting designs and have been researched for their effects on movement. There is little crossreferencing between research into these interventions. This review aimed to improve interdisciplinary understanding by analysing key characteristics of the published evidence. Methods Systematic mapping reviews identify gaps in an evidence base and identify questions for more indepth reviews. This review … Show more

“…Compression at the pelvis in DEFO shorts [31,32] can reduce the pain experienced by adults with intellectual disabilities, who experience high rates of falls and have gait and balance issues. The reason for this may be because the DEFO suits and shorts reduce the amplitude and range of movement in the spine and pelvis, Figure 9.…”

“…5,9 A limited body of evidence has examined the value of fabric orthoses for people with MS (PwMS). 10 Two previous studies included PwMS, both were mixed-methods feasibility studies. 6,7 Miller et al 7 investigated an upper limb orthotic sleeve compared with a placebo sleeve in PwMS and reported improvements in tremor (n 5 21).…”
